“…But My Words Will Never Disappear”

“Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words will never disappear.”

Mark 13:31 NLT

“I am creating new heavens and a new earth;
everything of the past will be forgotten.
Celebrate and be glad forever!”

Isaiah 65:17-18 CEV

Last week we discussed the bad news: Heaven and earth will disappear. But this week we get to talk about the good news: God’s words will never disappear. Let’s start with some science. By measuring the wavelengths of light emitted by stars, galaxies, and other objects in space, astronomers have made an interesting discovery. They observed that our universe is expanding. Also, light from the Big Bang, the creation of the universe, can still be measured today. What does this mean to us? It means the effects of the first words spoken by God in the Bible are observable even now, and they will last far into the future!

“‘Let there be light.’ These are God’s first recorded words. . . . the four words spoken by God in the beginning are still creating galaxies at the outer edges of the universe. Four words! And the the result is an ever-expanding universe that measures at least ninety-three billion light-years in diameter. If God can do that with four words, what are we worried about?”

Mark Batterson, Whisper

“My word is like the snow and the rain
    that come down from the sky to water the earth.
They make the crops grow
    and provide seed for planting and food to eat.
So also will be the word that I speak—
    it will not fail to do what I plan for it;
    it will do everything I send it to do.”

Isaiah 55:10-11 GNT

When God speaks, things happen, and He has a reason for everything He says. I think we sometimes forget the true power of His voice. His words have the strength and authority to create, to heal, and to perform miracles.

“How did God create? With His voice! . . . The voice that spoke the universe into existence is the same voice that parted the Red Sea and made the sun stand still. His voice can heal a withered hand or wither a barren fig tree. His voice can turn water into wine, install synaptic connections between the optic nerve and visual cortex in a blind man’s brain, and resurrect a man four days dead. There is nothing God’s voice cannot say, cannot do.”

Mark Batterson, Whisper

God sends His voice out into the universe and waits for His words to accomplish His plans. So when He speaks to us, it would behoove us to listen. Jesus said in John 13:34 (TLB): “And so I am giving a new commandment to you now—love each other just as much as I love you.” I love you. Those are the words of Jesus. The voice that spoke the universe into existence says that to you today.

“The voice of God is all-powerful, but that’s only half the story. His voice is also all-loving.”

Mark Batterson, Whisper

“And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires.”

2 Peter 1:4 NLT

God’s words are powerful, eternal, loving, and true. He will never lie to us or betray us. He has given us many promises in the Bible. We can cling to each one of them as absolute truth. And if He has spoken a promise to you personally, you can believe that He will accomplish it!

“God’s Word is absolutely true. You may not understand how God is going to bring about what He’s promised you, but He is keeping every promise that He has ever made. He will never deceive you or disappoint you, and He will never change His mind about what He’s told you.”

Charles F. Stanley, 30 Life Principles

I think sometimes we doubt God’s promises as being too good to be true. We don’t mean to. We’re just so used to the broken promises of imperfect humans that we have a hard time trusting. But this is exactly what we are called to do. God doesn’t give us His promises just to make us feel better, although they have that effect. When He speaks, He has a reason. He has something He wants to accomplish in us or through us. So His promises are more than just a gift. They are a command.

We may not see how His promises will be accomplished, but we are not called to understand, just believe. We must open our hearts and trust that God’s words for us are true. We must accept that He wants the best for us. And while we are waiting to see His promises fulfilled, we should thank Him for what He will do. Because we can be absolutely sure that He will do it!

“What promise have you been holding on to for a long time? Take a moment and fast-forward. Picture yourself holding your promise. . . . As you see the promise fulfilled, look up and offer the sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to the One who was and still is faithful.”

Faith Blatchford, God of Wonders

This week’s Scripture passages focus on the words of God. As we spend time reading His words, let’s remember that they are eternal, powerful, and absolutely true. Heaven and earth will disappear, but His words will never disappear!

“The grass withers and the flowers fade,
    but the word of our God stands forever.”

Isaiah 40:8 NLT
